Below you can find answers to many Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Most storage facilities require you to have storage insurance – in fact, most places won’t let you rent without it. Storage insurance can offer a broader scope of coverage than your renters or homeowners insurance protecting you against theft, risks and natural disasters.
Filing a claim for your stored goods won’t impact your homeowners policy.
- Most homeowners’ policies do not automatically provide self-storage goods coverage and a separate endorsement must be issued, subject to insurance company approval.
- Most homeowners’ policies only provide short-term (usually 30 days) coverage. Any extension would need to be approved by the insurance company.
- Contents in storage are subject to your homeowners’ deductible. Most homeowners’ policies have a minimum deductible of $500 and yours could be higher.
- Your claims-free discount could be lost and your premium could increase. If you report multiple claims under your homeowners’ policy during a five-year period, you run the risk of your coverage being canceled.
- Most homeowners’ policies will not cover business goods without a specific endorsement to your policy. The business usually has to fit the model of “home-based business” and must be approved by the insurance company.
- Homeowners’ policies, as a rule, will not provide vermin, fungus or flood coverage for Personal Property.
- Most homeowners’ policies only provide coverage for theft to property in storage.

Self-storage goods insurance protects you against damage to, or loss of, your property stored at a self storage facility from 25 different causes, including Fire, Earthquake, Water Damage, Burglary and more. See your Summary of Coverage for a complete list of the covered causes.
Many of the properties you own are eligible for coverage but there are limits and exclusions. Some of the exclusions are accounts, bills, firearms, currency, deeds, evidences of debt, securities, money, notes, animals, jewelry, watches, precious or semi-precious stones, furs and garments trimmed in fur. These items are not insurable under this policy. Coverage may also be declined on exotic, imported or high value contents. Stated Value Insurance Policies are available from most local insurance agents for items like antique cars and other high value collectibles or antiques. Please note the above-mentioned list of exclusions is not a complete list of exclusions. Please refer to your Summary of Coverage for a complete list of exclusions.
If you do not have stored property insurance or have not been enrolled in the Storsmart Program, signing up for coverage is simple! For insurance on a storage unit/space, simply go to the leasing office and request a Storsmart Enrollment Form to complete.
